Homemade Drinks Are The Best Way
To Encourage Nutrition In The Elderly
Nutrition is important at any age but nutrition for the elderly is more than just choosing the right foods. Sometimes poor nutrition is caused by external factors.
Links to Poor Nutrition for the Elderly
1 Eating alone when you have spent most of your life sitting around a table with your family is a real appetite
downer. For many the transition to retirement is not an easy with the changes in social and family dynamics often sited as the most difficult to come to terms with.
2 As we get older parts of our body tend to get a bit worn and sometimes require surgical intervention. Post surgery also affects our desire to eat as the general anesthetics takes months to leave our bodies. Some health conditions such as arthritis also makes preparation not only difficult but down right painful! The result is inadequate nutrition for the elderly
3 Having a reduced income in retirement determines our lifestyle choices. It may seem easy to miss a meal or add cheaper prepared options but cutting back on food intake and quality is not the answer in the long term. Budgeting in retirement coupled with part time work for senior citizens is a planned approach to avoid the need to compromise our health and well being.
4 Climate changes may seem an unlikely factor affecting nutrition for the elderly but I find that living on the Gold Coast the weather influences my diet big time! Sometimes it’s just too hot to bother! On the flip side I know that in winter my fluid intake takes a nose dive
5 On a personal level some of us have to admit we find cooking boring! I have been cooking for 50 years…….enough is enough! Homemade drinks are the perfect alternative if you don’t like cooking and washing up! I also like the idea that I can eat on the run, at the beach, out on the water and all I need is a really good chilly pack!
The answer is to drink your way to health!
What are the Best Drinks for Health?
I feel like a politician dodging the question but the answer to “What is the best drink for health is, “It depends!”
It depends on your taste buds and what you want the healthy drink to do! First things first. You need to decide whether to use a ready made drink or a homemade drink. If money is no object and you are not concerned about the healthiest option then ready made is where you’re at! But then you wouldn’t be reading this post so I’m going to assume that apart from quenching your thirst you are looking to understand just what is the best drink for your health. My choice of homemade drinks include: tea infusions, the healthiest smoothies and fruit infused water
Homemade Drinks v Ready Made Drinks
When compared to buying ready made a homemade drink can take advantage of using ingredients that are in season and therefore at their cheapest. Buying healthy drinks can sometimes be misleading. I checked a few labels and was more than a little surprised at the high level of sugars and preservatives in them. Just because the label says health y doesn’t make it so. When you make your own homemade drinks you can calculate sugars and carbs using a few simple steps.
I’m not a control freak but I like to know what I’m eating. I have just watched a TV programe where I learnt that bottled water contains plastic “do dahs” but not to worry the krill in the ocean can filter them! Last time I looked my gut does not contain any krill! I also know that there air I breathe is full of chemicals. Neither of these additives are in my control so my number one reason for using fresh fruit and vegetables, that I prepare myself, is I know exactly what goes into my drinks.
